Rooibos is a caffeine-free plant indigenous to the Cedarberg Mountains in South Africa. It is harvested from December to April, with 95% of the growing regions still cutting their crops by hand. Upon cutting, the stems and branches are hand bruised, turned and wetted to commence enzyme activity. Fermented Rooibos is red and yields a deep, rich red colour. Non fermented Rooibos is green and releases a grassy taste and higher concentration of antioxidants. As a caffeine-free, low in tannin tea with many health promoting properties, Rooibos is a very beneficial drink. It is recommended for people who experience headaches, insomnia, nervous tension, and mild depression. Rooibos alleviates skin problems such as eczema, acne, and diaper rash. The anti-spasmodic properties in Rooibos also relieve colic and stomach cramps in babies. Mothers too can benefit from drinking Rooibos while breast feeding when the body’s iron levels are low. Not only does Rooibos increase the absorption of iron in the body, it also contains iron, potassium, and copper. Rooibos also aids in the development of strong teeth and bones by providing calcium, manganese, and fluoride.
